New Paltz Men’s Soccer Back on Track with 1-0 Win over Potsdam

Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Junior forward Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored in the final four minutes, which was all the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (6-6-0, 3-3-0 SUNYAC) needed to prevail over host SUNY Potsdam (2-9-1, 1-4-0 SUNYAC) Friday afternoon, winning by a count of 1-0 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.

Altadonna was the beneficiary of the Bears' inability to clear out the ball after senior forward Dave Gardiner's (Malta, N.Y.) shot hit the post. He scored with 3:03 remaining in regulation, and Potsdam was unable to produce the equalizer. Senior forward Michael Ackerman (Castleton, N.Y.) also was credited with an assist on Altadonna's goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y.), who had seen all of 17 minutes and 45 seconds of action prior to Friday's tilt, drew the start in goal and came up big for the Hawks. In his first collegiate start, he earned a shutout and made four saves.

New Paltz came out guns blazing, as Altadonna nearly scored in the first minute of play. He fired a loose ball off a direct kick, but the Bears' goalkeeper, Joe Glackin, made the save. The Hawks would then take four additional shots before Potsdam's Chris Mack forced Power into action with an attempt on frame.

Junior forward Jamal Lis-Simmons (Highland, N.Y.) nearly put New Paltz on the board twice in the waning moments of the first half, but Glackin spoiled the Hawks' chances on both occasions.

At the half, the blue and orange held a 9-2 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Physical play ensued in the middle of the second stanza after neither team could sustain momentum in the opening portion of the period. The Hawks benefited from the physical play, which resulted in a flurry of shots, corner kicks and, eventually, Altadonna's game-winner.

Glackin was shouldered with the loss despite making four stops in goal for Potsdam.

New Paltz travels to Plattsburgh, N.Y., tomorrow for an important 1 p.m. conference match with SUNY Plattsburgh. The Hawks, who are in a four-way tie for second in the SUNYAC standings with nine points, would bolster its run toward a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament with a win or a draw on the road.
