New Paltz Unable to Overcome Three-Goal Deficit against Montclair State

Box Score

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Deana Hagel had one goal and two assists for Montclair State University (8-3, 1-0 NJAC), as the host Red Hawks prevailed by a 3-1 final over the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (6-6, 2-2 SUNYAC) on Friday evening at Sprague Field in non-conference action.

Hagel netted her seventh goal of the season in the 14th minute, successfully putting back a rebound off of her own shot. Jessica Murphy put the Red Hawks up 2-0 at 23:27 when she used a pass from Hagel to score from the left side of the circle.

At the break, Montclair State held the edge in shots (7-3) and penalty corners (6-2).

Hagel got involved with the offense a third time in the 49th minute when her shot from outside the circle was deflected by Melissa Flaherty and redirected into the goal.

Senior forward Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake, N.Y.) cut into Montclair State's advantage less than a minute after Flaherty's score, burying a shot from five yards out off of a penalty corner. The goal, Schloss's sixth of the season and the 26th of her career, puts her six away from tying the program's all-time mark of 32. Against Vassar College on Wednesday, Oct. 6, she became the program's all-time points record holder. Last season, she became the program's all-time leader in assists.

The Red Hawks hung on for the remainder of regulation, keeping the visiting Hawks from completing the comeback.

On the game, Montclair State held the upper hand in shots, 13-8, and took 10 penalty corners to New Paltz's seven.

Freshman goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) made seven saves in net for the Hawks, while Megan Bosland turned aside three shots in between the posts for the Red Hawks.

New Paltz returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15, when it resumes SUNYAC play against No. 10 SUNY Cortland. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Turf Field in New Paltz, N.Y.
