NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Junior
Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) and freshman
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J.) were double-event winners as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team (1-0) downed SUNY Oneonta (1-1), 118-87, Friday afternoon at Elting Pool in the 2010-11 home opener for New Paltz.
Rieth won by more than three seconds in the 200 freestyle (2:02.10) before uncorking a swift 56.28 in the 100 freestyle. Allocco shined in her home debut, winning by .01 in the 200 individual medley (2:17.96) while topping the 200 breaststroke field with a time of 2:37.45.
Senior
Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) lapped the competition in the 1000 freestyle, establishing a pool record in the event with her 10:53.49 performance. That swim eclipsed the former facility mark of 10:53.90 set by
Melinda Pullen during the 2009-10 season.
Both Hawk relays won as well. Seniors
Marissa Morris (Toms River, N.J.) and
Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), sophomore
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y.) and junior
Allie Moorhead (Marcy, N.Y.) combined for a 4:13.92 in the 400 medley relay, while sophomore
Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y.), senior
Allison Wells (Shelton, Conn.), Moorhead and Rieth clocked a 1:41.99 in the 200 freestyle relay. New Paltz's 200 freestyle relay wiped out the former pool record of 1:41.99, which the Hawk quartet of Rieth, Wells, Morris and Brittany Berrus set in 2008.
The Hawks return to competition tomorrow when they travel to New London, Conn., to face the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 1 p.m.
