NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz men's volleyball team continued their success on the court tonight with a 3-1 (25-30, 30-28, 30-25, 31-29) victory over #11 Stevens in a NECVA Metro conference game. The Hawks improve to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the league. Stevens falls to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Four Hawks tallied double-digit kills led by
Jake Moore with 20 and
Kevin Stross tallied 16 kills and a .419 hitting percentage, including three blocks.
Daniel Liberto finished with 13 kills and
Jonathan Van Dyke had 11 kills and three blocks.
Andrew Cassius tallied a double-double, handing out a game-high 63 assists and 12 digs as
Mike Fink dug out 18 on the night.
Sean Foley had eight kills and 10 digs for the Hawks, who will return to the court February 20-21 at the Endicott Tournament.
SteFan PremDas led the Ducks with a double-double with a game-high 21 kills and 10 digs. John Dennan finished with 14 kills and Bryant DeFranco had 10 kills and seven digs, including three blocks. Brandt Grobeis handed out 51 assists for the Ducks and had seven digs.
In set one, after trading points to a 6-6 tie, the Ducks scored six of the next eight points to open up the game. The Hawks were never able to recover as the Ducks took the set 30-25.
The Hawks rebounded in the second set, as both teams battled the entire set. With set tied at 21-21, the Hawks would score four the next five points to take a 25-22 and held off the Ducks for the 30-28 set win.
In the third set, the Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead and increased their lead to 10-5 on a kill by Liberto. The Ducks battle back though, cutting the lead to two at 16-14. The Hawks responded with three straight points to take control of the set again. The Hawks would tally the five points in a row to increase their lead to eight as they cruised to the 30-25 set win.
In the fourth set, after trading points to 2-2, the Hawks scored three straight to get some breathing room. The Ducks were quick to attack and tied the game back up at 6-6 and taking the lead on a kill from Grobeis. The Hawks trailed 25-23, but a kill by Moore the Hawks momentum. The Hawks would tie the set at 28-28 on an attacking error on PremDas. The Ducks would get the lead back and had a chance to force a fifth set on a Dennan kill, but the Moore slammed home a kill to tie the set at 29-29. The Hawks took a 30-29 lead on an attacking error by DeFranco and PremDas attack attempt went high to give the Hawks the 31-29 set victory and a 3-1 win.
