New Paltz Women’s Tennis Goes 2-0 on Final Day of SUNYAC Pool Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team remains unbeaten through Saturday at 4-0 (4-0 SUNYAC) after having defeated SUNY Oneonta, 7-2, and SUNY Cortland, 8-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division Pool Play. Cortland served as host to this multi-day event, which occurred on Friday and Saturday.

Due to forecasted rain for tomorrow, all Sunday matches were moved to Saturday, leaving each of the four divisional teams with two matches in one day.

The Hawks had little trouble with Oneonta. The No. 1 doubles tandem of seniors Stephanie Schara (Huntington, N.Y.) and Lindsey Garyn (Melville, N.Y.) won easily against Danielle Browarski and Emily Shannon, while sophomore Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y.) and freshman Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich.) upended Elizabeth Flamman and Lauren Skolnick at flight three doubles. New Paltz's No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y.) fell, 8-6, marking the first time this season that the Hawks have lost a point in a dual match.

Schara lost (6-3, 6-3) at No. 1 singles, but the rest of the lineup cleaned up at flights two through six. Wilson, Garyn, DiPaulo, Esposito and Munroe all kept their perfect records so far this season intact.

Against Cortland, the scores remained close at nearly every position, as the Red Dragons put up resistance all throughout the lineup. Schara and Garyn set the tone with a thrilling 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles, and the No. 2 and 3 tandems followed suit, giving the Hawks a 3-0 edge heading into singles.

Schara battled with Loraine Jelinek and inspired the team with a super tiebreaker victory. She won 7-5, 1-6, 10-2 (super tiebreaker is played to 10 points instead of a third set), while four additional Hawks won at their respective positions.

New Paltz next travels to Danbury, Conn., on Thursday to face Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
