New Paltz Overcomes 2-0 Deficit, but Falls Short to No. 4 Williams in OT

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.
– The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team fell, 3-2, in overtime to No. 4 Williams College (2-0-0) in a single overtime non-conference contest held Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field.

The Ephs struck first 33 seconds into the game with a goal by Charles Romero, which he ripped from 10 yards out.

In the 30th minute, junior midfielder Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) uncoiled a shot at the Eph keeper, but he made a diving save to diminish the scoring chance. At the end of the first half, the Ephs held a 19-13 shot margin and an 11-5 advantage in corners.

In the 66th minute, Romero knocked in his second goal of the game from the box to give Williams a 2-0 advantage.

The Hawks put themselves on the board in the 82nd minute when sophomore forward Harrison Lane (Glenmont, N.Y.) headed in a ball inside the box. Santalesa was the catalyst, as he found Lane with a useful cross.

The minutes continued to be eaten up until the Hawks made some noise in the 88th minute. Senior forward Dave Gardiner (Malta, N.Y.) found junior forward Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). Altadonna headed in his 25th career goal into the upper 90 to make the score 2-2.

Williams held the corner advantage, 4-3, and shots were equal, 6-6, at the end of regulation.

Williams exploded out of the gate when it established a scoring opportunity in the 91st minute. Romero fired a shot at junior goalkeeper Thomas Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), but it was rejected as Viscardi made a breathtaking save to keep the Hawks in it.

The Ephs secured the victory with nine seconds remaining in the overtime period. Charles Romero found Kiel Bonhomme, making the final score 3-2.

Williams held a 19-13 cushion in shots and an 11-5 edge in corners on the contest.

In between the posts for the Ephs, Peter Morrell compiled four saves in roughly 99 minutes of play.

Viscardi ended the afternoon with five saves in net for the blue and orange.

New Paltz (3-3-0) returns to action Saturday when it kicks off conference play against SUNY Oneonta. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
