Hawks Drop a Defensive Double-Overtime Thriller to Drew, 2-1

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Freshman goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) made 14 saves, and the Hawk defense thwarted scoring attempts left and right off penalty corners, but a goal in the waning minutes of the second overtime period lifted visiting Drew University (6-1, 0-0 Landmark) over the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (3-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) Wednesday afternoon at the Turf Field in non-conference action.

Shots were at a premium in the first half, but each side made the most of their chances. Senior forward Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake, N.Y.) rattled the back of the cage in the seventh minute to give the blue and orange a 1-0 lead early, but the Rangers equalized the score at the 19-minute mark with a goal by Kati Eggert.

Drew turned up the heat in the second frame, outshooting the hosts, 9-4, and forcing Pjetri to make six saves. The Hawks, however, stayed alive and forced overtime.

New Paltz had its chances in the first overtime session, as Schloss and senior midfielder Lauren Nicomini (Newton, N.J.) nearly netted the game-winner in the opening minutes. Drew controlled the ball for most of the end of the first overtime, but the blue and orange survived to see another 15-minute period go up on the scoreboard.

Nicomini forced Ranger keeper Christiana Carlini to make a stop in the 86th minute, and Pjetri snuffed out three scoring changes in a span of two minutes between the 88th and 90th minutes. Drew, however, would chip away at the Hawks, earning five penalty corners in a row before Eggert would rip the game-winner from the top of the circle at 97:14 to end the contest.

Drew outshot New Paltz, 23-11, and held a whopping 20-6 edge in penalty corners.

Lauren Fasano started the game in goal for the Rangers, but she saw just 35 minutes of action before Carlini relieved her. Carlini notched her fourth win of the year and turned away five Hawk shots.

New Paltz looks forward to an opportunity to even its record this Saturday, Sept. 25, when it takes on Richard Stockton College at home. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on the Turf Field. Due to multiple home event conflicts, live statistics will not be offered for the game.
