Hawks Roll Past Manhattanville with Three-Goal Outburst

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.
– The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (3-6-1, 1-2-0 SUNYAC) has not allowed a goal in regulation at home this season. The Hawks continued the trend with a 3-0 victory over Manhattanville College in a non-conference contest held Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field.

The Hawks displayed intensity as they appeared to be eager to play at home. This marked the first time the blue and orange has been on Alumni Field in three weeks.

New Paltz struck first in the 24th minute on a goal by sophomore forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y.). Junior midfielder Alexa Balestrieri (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) sent a cross to sophomore defender Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y.), who headed a pass to Abravanel for the score.

Sophomore defender Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) put the Hawks up by two with a goal off a pass by freshman midfielder Jessica Bonczyk (Hicksville, N.Y.) in the 43rd minute.

At the end of the first stanza, the Hawks held a 5-4 cushion in shots and the Valiants held a 1-0 edge in corners.

In the 52nd minute, junior midfielder Sherri Lajoie (River Edge, N.J.) nearly scored when she unleashed a shot off the crossbar.

Manhattanville's forward Holly Nonis had three scoring chances in the second half but could not capitalize as she missed high on all accounts.

Once again, the trio of Abravanel, Bowling and Balestrieri hooked up for a New Paltz score in the 77th minute. Abravanel netted in her second goal of the game, making the final score 3-0.

In between the pipes for the Valiants, Ali Bromson allowed three goals while saving nine shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) earned her fourth shutout on the season. Vega compiled six stops for the Hawks in the contest.

New Paltz returns to action when it hosts The College at Brockport on Friday, Oct. 1. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
