Women’s Swimming Beats RIT, Falls to Geneseo

Meet Results

GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team (4-2) beat the Rochester Institute of Technology (3-5), 272-68, and fell to SUNY Geneseo (7-1), 231-127, on Saturday afternoon on the second and final day of a tri-meet between the three programs on the Geneseo campus.

Team scoring for the meet was not tabulated until after Saturday's session, but a portion of the competition was held on Friday evening.

Junior Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) paced the Hawks, winning an event and placing runner-up in a second. Rieth took the 100 freestyle in 55.48 and added a second-place performance in the 50 freestyle (25.31).

In a tight 400 individual medley race, freshman Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J.) won by .06 seconds over Geneseo's Meghan Green. Allocco tapped in at 4:51.33, while Green registered a 4:51.39.

Green fell victim to another Hawk swimmer later on in the meet, as senior Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) edged her by two seconds in the 500 freestyle to top the field with a 5:21.04.

Due to Rieth's anchor leg, the New Paltz “A” 400 medley relay was able to overtake Geneseo's “A” contingent and win by half a second with a time of 4:10.38. Seniors Allison Wells (Shelton, Conn.) and Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) all partnered with Rieth on the relay.

Morris placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:01.32), Suzuka took second in the 200 backstroke (2:15.11) and Baker came in second in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.18) to round out the Hawk swimmers who placed among the top three.

New Paltz hosts SUNY Cortland on Friday, Jan. 21, at 4 p.m. in a Senior Day meet at Elting Pool.
