New Paltz Field Hockey Suffers 3-2 Overtime Setback to Ramapo

Box Score

MAHWAH, N.J. – An overtime goal by Amanda Baretta propelled Ramapo College (10-5) past the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (8-8) by a count of 3-2 on Monday afternoon in non-conference action. Baretta scored just 47 seconds into the overtime period, cashing in on a pass from Samantha Gardner.

In spite of the loss, sophomore forward Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) shined for New Paltz offensively, accounting for both Hawk goals. She connected on the only two shots she took all afternoon.

The Hawks did not lead the entire game, as Ramapo scored early and kept New Paltz in check. Jayne Manigrasso converted on a penalty stroke in the third minute before Aragosa leveled the tally in the 27th minute, scoring off of a pass from senior forward Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). Manigrasso notched her second marker of the contest less than two minutes before halftime, pushing a Baretta feed into the back of the goal.

Aragosa knotted the score at 2-all at 41:35, rattling the back of the cage off of a pass from junior defender Amy Lee (Farmington, Conn./Farmington). Despite uncorking nine shots in the second half, six of which were on goal, New Paltz could not break the tie, which forced the two teams into overtime.

The contest was played evenly throughout, as Ramapo and New Paltz had matching totals in shots (17), penalty corners (14) and saves (9). Sophomore goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was handed the loss, turning aside nine shots in goal for the Hawks, while her Roadrunner counterpart, Rebecca Elliott, also made nine stops.

New Paltz returns to the Garden State on Wednesday, Oct. 26, facing the non-conference Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
