MANLIUS, N.Y. – Setting out to defend its conference title, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (7-1) passed its first test of the weekend at the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament at Eastside Racquet Club, besting SUNY Oswego (1-11) in the quarterfinal round, 9-0.

The event, which runs from Oct. 7-9, features a team playoff format this year, marking a change from the usual flighted format that has been used at the conference championships in years past. The Hawks, who hold the top seed in the East Division, advance on to the semifinals tomorrow at 1 p.m. where they will face SUNY Oneonta, the East Division's No. 3 seed.

Oswego, who entered the tournament as the West Division's No. 4 seed, could not find an answer to New Paltz's depth. After sweeping through doubles, senior Juliette Brandon (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and freshman Abbott Brant (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) offered the Hawks' top singles performances, winning, 8-0, at their respective positions at flights four and six. Competing at No. 1 singles, junior Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) held her own, prevailing by a 6-2 count in the first set before rolling to a 6-0 victory in the second set.

The Lakers move on to the consolation bracket and take on The College at Brockport tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
