MANLIUS, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (8-2) lost in the title match at the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday afternoon at the Eastside Racquet Club, losing by a 5-1 final to SUNY Geneseo (11-1). The 2011 SUNYAC Championships were held from Friday, Oct. 7, through Sunday, Oct. 9.
Geneseo earns the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, which will occur in May 2012.
The championship bout featured a battle of the two top divisional seeds, as New Paltz entered as the East Division's No. 1 seed, while Geneseo entered as the West Division's No. 1 seed. The tournament was run in a team playoff format this year rather than the flighted format that has been used in years past.
Junior
Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and freshman
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./Islip) won, 9-8 (9-7), at flight two doubles to give the Hawks their lone point of the match. Geneseo prevailed, 8-0, at the other two doubles positions before winning three singles matches to put the match on ice. The match was played to the deciding point, meaning that flights one through three of singles did not finish.
New Paltz finishes its fall season at 8-2 overall and finished first or second in the SUNYAC for the 10th straight year. The Hawks are slated to commence the spring portion of their schedule from March 31-April 1, 2012, at the Wellesley Tournament.
