Men’s Swimming Cruises to 156-134 Win over Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Pete Nastasi (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), freshman Lucas Rusinak (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) and senior Jesse Sweeney (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) were all double-event winners, as the State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team (3-3) downed cross-river rival Vassar College (2-2), 156-134, on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks finished first in nine of the 16 events contested, which helped key the victory.

Nastasi won the 1,000 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, winning each with respective times of 10:35.33 and 1:02.93. Rusinak topped the field in the 200 freestyle (1:51.62) before touching first in the 500 freestyle (5:03.55). Sweeney took both backstroke events, as he won the 100 backstroke in 56.03 and took the 200 backstroke in 2:04.52.

In addition, senior Corey Lomas (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) boasted a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle (23.10), and senior Ray Amato (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills) registered the top standard in the 100 butterfly (57.01).

New Paltz's 400 freestyle relay contingent of freshmen Brendan Kewin (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Michael Lacroce (Palymra, Pa./Palmyra), Rusinak and sophomore Zane Taylor (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) edged out the Brewers' quartet by .26 seconds, clocking an event-best 3:27.45.

Second-place performances came from freshman Jack Spader (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:43.91), Lomas in the 100 backstroke (56.39) and the 100 freestyle (51.42), Lacroce in the 200 butterfly (2:06.58), Nastasi in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.24), junior Nick Dubois (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) in the 500 freestyle (5:12.64) and senior Marc Battisti (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) in the 400 individual medley (4:35.59).

New Paltz enjoys a two-week layoff from competition before it gears up for the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships, which run from Dec. 2-4 at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
