Box ScoreCORTLAND, N.Y. – Despite a spirited rally in the second half, led by a two-goal performance from sophomore forward
Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna), the third-seeded State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (8-10) fell to second-seeded SUNY Oneonta (13-6), 3-2, in the semifinal round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Friday afternoon, in Cortland, N.Y.
Oneonta's Jacqueline Camp's effort was vital in defeating the Hawks, as she contributed two goals and assisted the game-winning goal by Andrea Day in the Red Dragons' victory.
After the game, Aragosa and sophomore midfielder
Lauren Link (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team for their efforts in Friday's contest.
Both of Camp's goals came in the first half of action off penalty corners. The first marker was scored at 9:05, when Stephanie Fiske sent the corner to Ashley Morgan. Morgan delivered the ball to Camp, who sent a one-timer past Hawks goalkeeper Antonjia Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) from the left side. Goal number two was netted at 18:58 in very similar fashion: Fiske on a corner to Morgan, sent to Camp, beating Pjetri on the left side. Morgan recorded assists on both scores.
The two Camp goals were the only shots taken by the Red Dragons in the first half, while the Hawks took seven shots in the frame, but could not cash in. After the second goal, the Hawks inserted freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Brennan (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) in front of the cage. Brennan finished the game as the Hawks' keeper.
The Hawks were not denied in the second stanza. Aragosa scored her first goal of the afternoon at 45:09 off a cross from freshman midfielder
Deirdre O'Neill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), sneaking it in between Oneonta goalkeeper Tess Tracy and the left post, closing the deficit to 2-1. Less than three minutes later, Aragosa struck again, cleaning up a saved attempt from senior forward
Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y/Lindenhurst), depositing the equalizer at 47:56.
Oneonta spent a timeout to regroup itself, returning to the field aggressive on offense. The Red Dragons earned two penalty corners within the next few minutes, one at 49:48 and another at 51:38. The latter corner provided the eventual game-winner, as Camp took control of the ball and sent it toward the goal. Day redirected the ball, scored from the left side, and Oneonta took the final lead of the day at 3-2.
New Paltz created many opportunities to tie, earning five penalty corners in just over four minutes of play from 53:17 to 57:31, but could not find the net. The Hawks led in shots taken, 13-5, and penalty corners earned, 12-6. Tracy made six saves for the Red Dragons in the victory, while Brennan stopped one shot, taking the loss. Pjetri did not record a save in the effort and was not credited with a decision.
The Hawks finished the season at 8-10 overall. Their 4-2 conference record earned them their second berth into the SUNYAC Tournament, a tournament only in its second year of existence. Head coach
Shanna Vitale became the program's leader in career victories this season, bringing her overall total to 25 wins.
