NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite winning both relays, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team (3-4) was unable to match the firepower of Ramapo College, as the Hawks lost by a 136-126 final to the Roadrunners (2-1) on Saturday afternoon at Elting Pool.
Last year, New Paltz defeated Ramapo by a slim margin on the road. This season, a similar script was played out with the home team succumbing by a small edge, though the meet was won before the final relay. The Hawks went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle relay, which was the final event of the afternoon.
Senior
Pete Nastasi (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) was a double-event winner for the Hawks, taking the 100 breaststroke (1:02.60) and the 200 breaststroke (2:15.36), and he also was a runner-up finisher in the 200 individual medley (2:05.67).
Senior
Jeremy Borrelli (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was the only other Hawk male to touch first in an individual event, as he clocked an event-winning 50.00 in the 100 freestyle.
The 400 medley relay team of senior
Jesse Sweeney (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), Nastasi, senior
Ray Amato (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills) and senior
Corey Lomas (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) kicked off the meet with a Hawk victory, as the quartet charted a winning standard of 3:39.34. In the 200 freestyle relay, Borrelli, Amato, Sweeney and Lomas combined sprint talents, leading a 1-2 New Paltz finish with a time of 1:28.98.
Other second-place performances came from freshman
Lucas Rusinak (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:29.18) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.62), senior
Marc Battisti (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) in the 200 freestyle (1:49.54), Sweeney in the 100 backstroke (54.77) and 200 backstroke (2:00.36), freshman
