EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – A strong 200 medley relay performance from the foursome of juniors
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown),
Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) and
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and senior
Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and a third-place swim in the 1650 freestyle by sophomore
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) highlighted the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team's first day of competition at the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday evening at the Nassau County Aquatics Center.
Suzuka, Lown, Marshall and Rieth combined for a third-place time of 1:50.60 in the 200 medley relay, which stood just more than three seconds off the NCAA “B” qualifying standard.
Allocco covered the 1650 freestyle in 17:53.83, while a trio of Hawks also placed in the top 10 in the event. Sophomore
Niki Ghostlaw (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) touched seventh (18:53.47), sophomore
Kelly Durma (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) placed ninth (19:06.11) and freshman
Rachael Cummings (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) took 10th (19:34.03).
After the first day of competition, the Hawks sit in second place with 142 points, trailing only NCAA Division I Wagner College, which boasts 207. SUNY Oneonta ranks third with 124 points after day one.
The Hawks resume competition tomorrow at the three-day ECAC Winter Championships, as there will be two sessions on the meet's second day: a 10 a.m. session and a 6 p.m. session. All heats are being swum in a timed-final format.
