No. 15 New Paltz Unable to Keep Pace with No. 3 Stevens in 3-0 Defeat

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The No. 15 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (9-8, 2-4 UVC) lost, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 28-26), to the No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology (12-3, 5-1 UVC) on Tuesday evening in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.

New Paltz was done in once again by its performance both on the serve and on serve receive. The Hawks misfired on 13 serves and also allowed the Ducks to rack up seven service aces. New Paltz outhit Stevens on the match (.318 to .309) and also held the upper hand in blocking (eight total team blocks to the Ducks' six).

The Hawks' three powerhouse hitters all performed well. Junior opposite Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y.) landed a match-high 17 kills, achieving a .379 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Keith MacDonald (Monroe Township, N.J.) had 11 kills and hit .455. Junior middle blocker Kevin Stross (Port Washington, N.Y.) put together a .562 hitting percentage that included a line of nine kills and no attack errors in 16 total attempts. Freshman middle blocker Dylan Rabidoux (Rochester, N.Y.) boasted one block solo and three block assists, while MacDonald led the team in digs with six. Senior setter Andrew Cassius (Brooklyn, N.Y.) handed out 25 assists to help ignite the attack.

For Stevens, SteFan PremDas had 15 kills, while Jonathan Landis collected 11. Brant Grobeis assumed the setter position and distributed 36 assists, while Aaron Ostrovsky and Jake Modestow powered the defense with six digs and three block assists, respectively.

With the loss, New Paltz's four-match winning streak is snapped. The Hawks hope to rebound on Friday, Feb. 25, when they travel to Beverly, Mass., to face Endicott College at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match.
