Red Dragons Squeak by Hawks in Double-Overtime Thriller, 3-2

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In a frenzied finish, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (2-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) could not outlast the persistent attack of SUNY Oneonta (3-2, 1-0 SUNYAC), losing, 3-2, in double overtime to begin play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Friday afternoon at the Turf Field.

New Paltz started the scoring midway through the first half, when sophomore defender Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park) took a 14th-minute penalty corner from senior forward Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and deposited it in net over Oneonta goalkeeper Tess Tracy.

Oneonta responded with just a minute left before halftime, when Kelcy Forbragd took a rebounded save and scored over sophomore goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) after a long offensive possession.

The scoring sped up to start the second half, with both teams rattling the back of the cage in the first eight minutes. Stock netted her second goal of the game off a penalty corner from senior forward Maryana Organidis (Belford, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) and sophomore midfielder Lauren Link (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) at 40:12. Oneonta then responded less than three minutes later with a penalty corner score of its own. Megan Warning and Ashley Morgan got the ball through the thick of the New Paltz defense to the left of the goal, where Ashley Johnson was able to tie the game with a quick shot.

Both defenses stiffened, and play went to overtime. Despite four shots by New Paltz and three by Oneonta, both goalkeepers held firm. However, when the second overtime began, the defensive game loosened, and Oneonta was able to get three quick shots to start the period. The third shot taken by Oneonta in the period, by Andrea Day, managed to find a way past Pjetri, ending the game after almost 88 minutes of play. New Paltz was not able to get a shot off in the final overtime.

Pjetri finished the game with 13 saves on 16 chances, while Tracy saved seven of the nine New Paltz shots on goal.
