Strong Attack Keys New Paltz Men’s Soccer in 4-0 Win over Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.
– The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (4-4-0) scored two goals in each half, besting host Bard College (2-5-0) by a 4-0 final on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

Senior defender Brendan Ujvary (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) put the Hawks on the board in the 19th minute, using passes from senior midfielders/forwards Stephen Bafumi (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney) and Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) off a short corner kick to set up a goal. The Hawks converted on another corner-kick opportunity later on in the half, as senior defender Jamal Lis-Simmons (Highland, N.Y/Highland) buried a shot in the back of the net at 32:02.

In the 67th minute, freshman midfielder Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) scored his second goal in two days, as he blasted a hard shot from deep that went into the upper right-hand side of the goal. Finally, at 81:00, freshman midfielder Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) closed the scoring on the day, cashing in on a pass from junior midfielder/forward Harrison Lane (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central).

Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned the win in net for New Paltz in 45 minutes of action, while senior goalkeeper Tom Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) took over in the second half and kept a clean sheet with three saves. Bard's Devin Connelly made a game-high five stops in the losing effort.

On the afternoon, the Hawks outshot the Raptors by a 26-5 cushion and held the upper hand in corners by a 9-5 margin.

New Paltz begins State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, Sept. 23, taking on SUNY Cortland in Cortland, N.Y., at 4 p.m.
