Hawk Field Hockey Downed by No. 16 Montclair State, 5-0

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (3-4) was unable to match the high-scoring attack of No. 16 Montclair State University (8-0), as the Hawks fell to the Red Hawks, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at the Turf Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was unable to withstand the constant barrage of shots coming from Montclair State, who put 13 of its 27 shots attempted on goal. Pjetri was able to save six of those attempts, with defensive saves coming from junior defender/midfielder Kim Lepore (Stanfordville, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) and sophomore Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park).

Montclair State began its scoring attack in the 14th minute with an unassisted shot slapped low from the left side by Michelle Hagel. In the 30th minute, Montclair State's season-leader in goals, Brittany Carroll, drove right of the cage, crossed over Pjetri, and netted her ninth goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, the Red Hawks scored their last goal of the half thanks to a Devin McNamara shot, assisted by Carroll, in which Pjetri gave a strong effort to kick save but was not able to prevent the goal.

Up 3-0 at half, Montclair State did not slow down. At 46:56, Hagel scored her second goal of the game, cashing in on a Frances Schafer assist. Schafer herself would go on to score the contest's final goal at 54:39 after a Kate Norgard pass allowed her to give the ball a quick tip from the middle of circle.

The Hawks' shots came in bunches throughout the game, limiting their number of attack opportunities. New Paltz's only three shot attempts in the first half came within eight seconds of each other on one attack, while the majority of the eight second-half shots taken (6) occurred during the last minute of the game. In that last-minute rally, sophomore forward Asia O'Han (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) fired off three rapid shots, followed by New Paltz attempting three shots off two penalty corners earned with no time remaining. A Laura Cummings save of sophomore midfielder Lauren Link's (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) final shot ended the game.

The Red Hawks outshot the Hawks 27 to 11 on the afternoon while earning 19 penalty corners to New Paltz's four.

The Hawks continue their trek through the season Saturday, Sept. 24, facing non-conference Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J., at 1 p.m.
