MADISON, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (2-0) avenged last year's overtime loss to Drew University (1-2) on Sunday afternoon, besting the host Rangers in overtime by a 3-2 final. The victory gave the Hawks the Drew Field Hockey Fall Festival title, as they earned a spot in the championship contest after beating Cabrini College, 3-0, on Saturday.
Senior forward
Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) helped power the New Paltz attack, scoring two goals for the second time in as many games. In total, she took 10 shots, nine of which were on frame.
After both teams peppered each other's goalkeepers in the first few minutes of the overtime period, Miller took a shot that was saved by Drew goalkeeper Lauren Fasano. Miller then collected the rebound and chipped in a shot in the 76th minute to give the Hawks the tournament title.
Melissa Boyd scored off of a Meghan Howlett pass in the sixth minute to open scoring, and after taking seven shots in a span of nearly 15 minutes, New Paltz leveled the tally. Miller teed off on a loose ball, and junior defender
Amy Lee (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) was credited with an assist on the play.
Miller nearly scored again in the 28th minute, but her teammate, sophomore defender
Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park), caromed Miller's shot that was saved and rattled the back of the cage to put New Paltz on top heading into the intermission.
Drew's Angela Terracciano evened the score at 43:45, cashing in on a feed from Erin Maguire. The Rangers took 11 shots in the second period, four of which were saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), but the Hawk defense stood tall to force overtime.
On the afternoon, Drew outshot New Paltz by a 21-18 margin and held the upper hand in penalty corners, 12-6.
Pjetri made 11 saves in the winning effort, while Fasano suffered the loss in the Ranger cage with a game-high 12 stops.
New Paltz travels east on I-84 Thursday, Sept. 8, for a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Western Connecticut State University.
