Hawk Men’s Swimming Drops 137.5-124.5 Heartbreaker to Cortland

Meet Results

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team (4-7) fell on the short end of a meet that came down to the last relay, as the Hawks dropped a 137.5-124.5 decision to SUNY Cortland (8-4) on Friday afternoon at Harriet Holsten Pool.

With the score tied at 122.5-all heading into the meet's final event, the 200 freestyle relay, Cortland touched out New Paltz's “A” contingent, which wound up getting disqualified. Due to the disqualification, the Red Dragons went 1-2 in the event.

Freshman Lucas Rusinak (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) and seniors Pete Nastasi (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and Ray Amato (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills) each were double-event winners individually for the Hawks. Rusinak touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:19.48) and 500 freestyle (5:02.33), Nastasi topped the field in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.24) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.17) and Amato captured the 100 butterfly (55.27) and 200 butterfly (2:06.05).

Senior Marc Battisti (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) boasted a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:49.33) and a runner-up performance in the 200 individual medley (2:04.62), while senior Jesse Sweeney (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) picked up first-place points in the 100 backstroke (56.10). Senior Jeremy Borrelli (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) placed second in both the 50 freestyle (22.93) and the 100 freestyle (50.78), while sophomore Zane Taylor (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) clocked a second-place time of 2:25.02 in the 200 breaststroke.

New Paltz competes in its final tune-up before the 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday, Jan. 28, as it takes on the Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the meet, the team will honor its seven seniors as a part of Senior Day festivities.
