SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team won eight of the nine relays contested at the Union Relays hosted by Union (N.Y.) College on Saturday in its 2012-13 season opener, capturing the team title with 122 points. Union placed second with 78 points, while the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (76) and Montclair State University (66) rounded out the field.
The 400 medley relay team comprised of seniors
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central), freshman
Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and junior
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) led off the meet with an event-winning 4:08.12, while the 300 backstroke relay squad of Scalise, sophomore
Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) and Suzuka won its event with a time of 3:09.91.
New Paltz was edged by .19 seconds in the 300 breaststroke relay, as Marshall, junior
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and sophomore
Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) combined for a time of 3:37.56. The Hawks bounced back in the 300 butterfly relay, though, with Graffin, freshman
Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and Marshall blasting the field with a 3:04.61.
The 500 freestyle crescendo relay contingent of Lown, Scalise, freshman
Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) and Allocco touched first with a time of 4:51.25, while the 200 freestyle relay team of Lown, Suzuka, Graffin and Scalise charted a first-place 1:41.10. New Paltz's 600 individual medley relay that consisted of Marshall, Allocco and Suzuka won with a time of 6:58.35, while the Hawks' 200 medley relay squad of Suzuka, senior
Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), Marshall and Graffin posted a first-place 1:55.30. Finally, New Paltz closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay, as Graffin, Buyes, Lown and Scalise combined for a 3:44.07 standard.
New Paltz visits the Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. for its first dual meet of the 2012-13 campaign.
