NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (6-1, 3-0 SUNYAC East) comes in as the favorites to take home this year's title at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, which will be held from Oct. 5-7 at the Binghamton Tennis Center in Binghamton N.Y.
New Paltz enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC East Division after going a perfect 3-0 in SUNYAC play and will open the tournament with a match against No. 4 West SUNY Oswego (1-8, 0-3 SUNYAC West), whom the Hawks swept, 9-0, back on Sept. 1, on Friday, Oct. 5, at 3 p.m. Defending SUNYAC champion SUNY Geneseo (6-1, 3-0 SUNYAC West) is the No. 1 seed in the West Division. These two teams have finished the SUNYAC Tournament in first and second place each of the past six seasons, and have won a combined eight titles (four each) since the 2001 campaign. New Paltz defeated Geneseo, 5-4, back on Sept. 14.
The Hawks individually had incredibly strong seasons in singles play in the fall portion of the regular season. Senior
Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and junior
Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) are each yet to lose a match in a flighted format contest and finished the fall a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. As a team, New Paltz finished 23-1 in singles play against SUNYAC East opponents. Senior captain

Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), sophomore
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) each finished 5-2 at No. 2 and No. 4-6, respectively.
In doubles, the duo of Munroe and
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) stands at a perfect 7-0 at flight two. At No. 1, Wilson and DiPaulo come in with a 4-3 mark, while Esposito and Schmidt are 5-2 at No. 3.
The Hawks last won the SUNYAC championship in 2010, coming out victorious over Geneseo in the last-ever flighted format tournament. Geneseo won the 2011 crown in the team format tournament with a finals victory over New Paltz, 5-1.
