Hawk Women’s Tennis Returns to SUNYAC Finals with 5-1 Victory over Oneonta; Faces Rematch with Geneseo

Box Score

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (8-1, 3-0 SUNYAC East) is heading back to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament finals after a 5-1 victory over SUNY Oneonta (7-4, 1-2 SUNYAC East) on Saturday in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

New Paltz lost in the finals last year to SUNY Geneseo in the first-ever team format tournament for the SUNYAC championship. The Hawks have finished no worse than second in the SUNYAC Tournament in each of the last 10 seasons and have won the title four times over that span.

Seniors Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) fell to Danielle Browarski and Lauren Skolnick at No. 1 doubles, 9-7, but were picked up by the tandems of junior Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) and senior Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively. Munroe and Tracy defeated Brynn Sussman and Abigail Smith, 8-3, while Esposito and Schmidt took down Colette Lankowicz and Emily Maggiore, 8-5.

The Hawks went on to sweep the three singles matches which were played to their entirety to earn the match victory. Wilson rebounded from doubles to defeat Browarski at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Schmidt was victorious over Lankowicz, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, while freshman Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) won her flight six match, 6-3, 6-1, over Smith. The rest of the Hawks held leads in their respective singles matches before New Paltz clinched the victory and cut the rest of the matches short.

New Paltz will take on the winner of Geneseo tomorrow, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. from the Binghamton Tennis Center to determine this year's SUNYAC champion, which will earn an automatic berth into the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in the spring.
