New Paltz Men’s Soccer Wins, 1-0, over SUNYIT

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Freshman forward Angelo DiMatteo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) scored in the 44th minute, lifting the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (7-6-1) to a 1-0 victory over non-conference SUNYIT (6-7-0) on Monday afternoon at the Turf Field. It moved the Hawks back over the .500 mark heading into the weekend.

In front of a lively 249-person Columbus Day crowd, the Hawks dominated possession from start to finish, holding a commanding 26-6 edge in shots. However, of those 26 shots, only nine were on net.

The Hawks controlled possession for the final five minutes of the first stanza, earning three corner kicks during that time. A minute after their third corner, freshman midfielder Joseph Hughes (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) slid a pass in to DiMatteo, who blasted a ball to the lower left-hand corner of the net for the contest's only goal.

The second half featured less shooting by the Hawks, as they only took 11 shots—just two of which were on target. That one first-half marker, however, stood up through the final 45 minutes of play, and the home team won for the second time in as many games.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) kept a clean sheet for the Hawks, making two saves in the win, while Malick Faye stopped eight shots in the loss for the Wildcats.

In addition to dominating the shot margin, New Paltz took six corners to SUNYIT's none.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, for a 1 p.m. State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tilt against SUNY Oneonta. As a part of Saturday's contest, New Paltz will be honoring heroes through the Wounded Warrior Project. Admission into Saturday's game at Alumni Field will be $5, with all proceeds benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project.
