No. 15 New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Edges Upset-Minded Penn State Behrend in Five Sets

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Overall and conference records were thrown out the window Saturday afternoon on the first day of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover at the Stevens Institute of Technology, as the 15th-ranked State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (8-1, 2-0 UVC) found itself on the winning end of a five-set match against winless Penn State Behrend (0-8, 0-2 UVC), topping the Lions, 3-2 (25-16, 25-22, 26-28, 26-28, 15-11).

New Paltz hit the ball well as a team, achieving a .317 attack percentage, but Penn State Behrend kept up by hitting at a .210 clip. The Hawks managed 47 digs on the match, while the Lions recorded 38.

Offensively, senior opposite Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) led the way for the Hawks with 24 kills and a .378 hitting percentage, while senior middle blocker Kevin Stross (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) also caused problems for the Lion blockers with 16 kills. Sophomore setter Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) handed out a match-high 37 assists, while senior libero Michael Dauernheim (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) collected 10 digs. Stross and Van Tyne patrolled the net, as Stross had one block solo and five block assists, while Van Tyne corralled one block solo and four block assists.

For Penn State Behrend, Kevin Dyer and Grant Kocher paced the attack with 14 kills apiece, and Evan Fullerton distributed 28 assists. Kocher shored up the back row with nine digs, while Tory Larson keyed the front row defensively with two block solos.

The Hawks continue action at the UVC Crossover tomorrow afternoon, taking on D'Youville College at 10 a.m. before squaring off with No. 6 Nazareth College at 2 p.m.
