No. 15 New Paltz Men's Volleyball Beats D'Youville, Loses to No. 6 Nazareth at UVC Crossover

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The No. 15 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (9-2, 3-1 UVC) split on the second and final day of a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover at the Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday. The Hawks topped D'Youville College (3-6, 2-2 UVC), 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20), before falling to No. 6 Nazareth College (8-4, 2-2 UVC), 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-21).

Against D'Youville, senior middle blocker Kevin Stross (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) keyed the Hawk offense with a .400 hitting percentage off 11 kills and three attack errors in 20 total attempts, while senior opposite Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) registered a team-high 19 kills. Sophomore setter Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) handed out 35 assists, while senior libero Michael Dauernheim (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) reinforced the back row 12 digs. Van Tyne dominated off the serve, landing six service aces.

The Hawks were unable to match the firepower of Nazareth in the nightcap, as they dropped their second contest of the season against a nationally-ranked team. The Golden Flyers hit .333 as a team, while the Hawks posted a .167 hitting percentage. Nazareth had four blocks to New Paltz's three, and it outpaced the Hawks in digs by a 29-27 margin.

Van Tyne and Stross tied for the team-high in kills with nine, and Stross achieved a .667 hitting percentage. Garo distributed 24 assists, while Van Tyne and Dauernheim had six digs each.

For Nazareth, Billy Gimello and Alex Houghtalen tied for the match-high in kills with 11 apiece, and E.J. Wells-Spicer assumed the setting duties and handed out a match-high 24 assists. Dan Mowery powered the defense with seven digs, and Nick McDonagh tallied three block assists.

New Paltz returns to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 15, as it hosts Stevens at 7 p.m. in a UVC match.
