ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 12 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (12-3, 6-2 UVC) split on the first day of a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover held at Nazareth College's Kidera Gymnasium on Saturday, losing to No. 9 Medaille College (15-5, 6-2 UVC), 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22), before topping Hilbert College (5-14, 1-8 UVC), 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-10).

Despite hitting at a .353 clip in the first set against Medaille, the Hawks were unable to fire the opening salvo, and the Mavericks took advantage of New Paltz's eight attack errors in the second set to go up, 2-0. The Hawks played Medaille close in the third frame, but the Mavericks staved them off and posted the straight-set sweep.

New Paltz was led offensively by junior outside hitter Bryan Weber (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), who had eight kills and three attack errors in 20 total attempts (.250 hitting percentage), and senior opposite Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), who notched a team-high 10 kills. Sophomore setter Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) handed out 26 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Victor Tuminelli (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) helped out the back row on defense with five digs. Van Tyne and sophomore middle blocker Dylan Rabidoux (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) tied for the team-high in block assists with three each.

For Medaille, Nick Johnson and Barrett Trevor keyed the attack with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, which helped the Mavericks post a lights-out hitting percentage of .484 for the match. David Riggsby handled the setting duties and doled out 31 assists, while Brandon Kilijanski corralled a match-high eight digs. Erin Kelly reinforced the front row on defense with seven block assists.

New Paltz rebounded against Hilbert, overwhelming the opposing Hawks in each set of play. The Blue and Orange had seven total team blocks to Hilbert's two, and New Paltz also boasted 26 digs as a team.

Van Tyne led a balanced New Paltz offense with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, while Garo dished out 27 assists. Weber and Van Tyne each finished with four service aces, and Garo kept rallies alive with his match-high nine digs. Sophomore outside hitter Brian O'Connor (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) was impressive off the block, nabbing one block solo and three block assists.

For Hilbert, Scott Ross and Adam Weaver each floored a team-best five kills, and Stephen Phillips handed out 16 assists. Frederick Sickau, Ryan Ratajczak and Weaver all wound up with three digs, and Sickau added a block solo to his defensive statistics.

New Paltz finishes up play at the UVC Crossover tomorrow afternoon, as the Hawks take on 14th-ranked Elmira College at 1:30 p.m.
