POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On the first day of the Vassar Tournament Friday afternoon, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (15-10) split its matches, losing, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-11), to No. 3 Springfield College before downing Newbury College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-20).
Against Springfield, sophomore setter/outside hitter
Brian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had a team-high seven kills, while sophomore setter
Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) handed out all 21 of the team's assists. Smith also pitched in defensively with a team-high six digs, while senior opposite
Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) accounted for the entirety of the Hawks' blocking with two block solos.
New Paltz relied on a balanced attack against Newbury in the nightcap. Smith and Van Tyne tied for a match-high eight kills, and Garo kept things moving on offense with 29 assists. Garo also shored up the back row with 15 digs, while sophomore outside hitter
Brian O'Connor (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) helped out defensively on the front row with six total blocks (one solo, five assist).
The Hawks close out action at the Vassar Tournament tomorrow, facing Lancaster Bible College at 10 a.m. before squaring off with No. 15 Baruch College at 4 p.m.
