Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) narrowly missed a triple-double as the State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (18-10) edged non-conference New Jersey City University (14-16) in straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-23) on Senior Night on Thursday at the Hawk Center.
Van Tyne picked up a team-high 11 kills and eight total blocks while dishing out six assists in Thursday's victory. He was helped by sophomore setter
Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), who handed out 26 assists and added five kills of his own to hit at a team-best .556 clip.
Defensively, senior libero
Michael Dauernheim (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) came up big with a match-high 11 digs, but NJCU took the edge with 33 total digs to the Hawks' 30. The Hawks offensively overmatched their opponents, hitting at a .287 clip compared to the Gothic Knights' .110.
New Paltz never trailed in the first two sets, coming out on top, 25-21 and 25-19. The Hawks fell behind late in the third set, 18-17, before recovering to pick up the 25-23 match-clinching win.
The Hawks hit the road on Wednesday, April 11, as they visit Ramapo College in their final tune-up before the 2012 United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Tournament. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
