OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (1-0) got its season started off on the right foot, taking down the SUNY Oswego (0-1), 9-0, in their season opener Saturday afternoon at Romney Tennis Courts.
Seniors Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) won, 8-0, and No. 1 doubles, while junior Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) also prevailed, 8-0, in the No. 2 flight. Senior Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) won their No. 3 doubles match, 8-1.
Wilson defeated Nicole Leader at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0, and DiPaulo tallied a win at No. 2 over Lauren Stall, 6-1, 6-1. Munroe won her singles match at No. 3 over Paige Edgar, 6-0, 6-1, while Esposito and Schmidt both won at No. 4 and 5, respectively, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) picked up her first career win at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0, over Kelly Corwin.
New Paltz travels to Oneonta, N.Y. for State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play from Sept. 7-9, where the Hawks will take on conference opponents SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Cortland and SUNY Plattsburgh over the three days of competition.
