NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (5-0, 3-0 SUNYAC East) avenged its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament finals defeat, defeating defending champion SUNY Geneseo (3-1, 2-0 SUNYAC West), 5-4, on the North Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
The Hawks held an important 2-1 lead after doubles play. Seniors
Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and
Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) won, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, while junior
Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) also prevailed, 9-7, in the No. 2 flight. Senior
Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and sophomore
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) fell to Amanda Rosati and Sarah Shields, 8-6, in the No. 3 doubles match.
Needing to win three singles matches to take the match, the Hawks' top three each won in straight sets to clinch the victory for New Paltz. Wilson defeated Mare Santos at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3, and DiPaulo tallied a win at No. 2 over Dexuan Yuan, 6-1, 6-2. Munroe also won her singles match at No. 3 over Katie Talbot, 6-4, 6-1. Esposito fell at No. 4 to Rosati, 6-1, 6-4, and Schmidt also lost her No. 5 singles match to Shields, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) fell in three sets to Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam, 5-7, 7-5, 10-3.
New Paltz plays again tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host the College at Brockport at the North Tennis Courts. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m.
