New Paltz Field Hockey Cruises Past Oswego, 6-1

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Spurred by a balanced attack, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (4-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) downed SUNY Oswego (1-5, 1-1 SUNYAC) by a 6-1 final on Friday afternoon in New Paltz's 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener at the Turf Field.

Six different student-athletes found the back of the cage for the Hawks, as the home team scored four times in the first half and twice in the second.

Junior forward Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) opened scoring 3:46 into the contest when she rattled the back of the cage off a pass from junior midfielder/forward Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern). Conklin made it a 2-0 game three minutes later when she ripped a shot from outside the circle that deflected off the goalkeeper and trickled into the goal.

Sophomore midfielder Deirdre O'Neill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) scored her first goal of the 2012 campaign in the ninth minute, as she cashed in on a deflected sweep from a penalty corner. Senior forward Morgan Lizotte (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) rounded out the Hawks' scoring in the first half when she put away a deflection off a play in from senior defender Amy Lee (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) that was well outside the circle.

Freshman forward Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored the Hawks' second goal off a penalty-corner chance in the 43rd minute, as a scramble in front of the net left her a chance to poke the ball in toward the left post.

Oswego spoiled New Paltz's shutout bid in the 58th minute, as Courtney Collins pushed a pass in from the right and Michelle Ruskey put away her third marker of the season. Just more than two minutes later, freshman midfielder/forward Caitlin Dwyer (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) spelled out the final tally, receiving a ball from Lizotte and scoring.

New Paltz held a 16-11 margin in shots, while Oswego took eight corners to the Hawks' seven.

Junior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) earned the win, making one save in 45 minutes of action before sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Brennan (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) took over the second half. Brennan made three stops and allowed one goal.

For Oswego, Grace Lombardi took the loss, lasting 27:41 with one save and four goals allowed to her ledger. Nicole Moccaldi finished out the game and made four saves while permitting two markers. Ayla Homer also chipped in with a defensive save.

The Hawks continue SUNYAC action tomorrow afternoon, as they host SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. at the Turf Field.
