Box Score
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – After allowing a goal to Union (N.Y.) College in the 13th minute, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (5-3) scored two unanswered to defeat the host Dutchwomen (2-5), 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Frank Bailey Field. Junior midfielder/forward
Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) had two assists for the Hawks.
Union controlled the tempo of the game for the first 12 minutes, taking seven shots and three penalty corners before Hannah Najar found the stick of Caroline Moran at 12:10 for the tilt's first goal. Union continued to take shots at will before the Hawks spent much of the final five minutes of the first half in their attacking third. Inserting the ball in off a penalty-corner chance in the 33rd minute, Conklin fed freshman midfielder/defender
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), who then scored to knot the tally at 1-all.
The tables turned in the second half, as a 12-3 Union margin in shots from the first half turned into a 13-6 edge in favor of New Paltz in the final 35 minutes of the contest.
After peppering Molly McCune, the Dutchwomen's goalkeeper, with shots in the 63rd, 64th and 65th minutes, junior forward
Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) converted on a Conklin pass at 64:46 to give the visiting Hawks a 2-1 advantage.
Following that marker, Union earned two penalty corners in the final five minutes and had a goal called back because the shot was too high. Ultimately, the Dutchwomen were unable to produce the equalizer, and New Paltz came out victors for the fifth time this season.
Union held the upper hand in both shots (18-16) and penalty corners (12-4), but the Hawks took 12 shots on goal to the Dutchwomen's nine.
Junior goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) earned the win in the cage, making eight stops, while McCune absorbed the loss in a 10-save effort.
New Paltz is set to host a pair of non-conference opponents from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) this weekend. The Hawks take on Richard Stockton College on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. and square off with No. 20 Rowan University on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 12 p.m.
