New Paltz Field Hockey Knocks Off William Paterson, 3-0

Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – After a scoreless first half, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (2-0) poured on the offense, coming away with a 3-0 win over William Paterson University (1-2) on Wednesday evening at Wightman Stadium in non-conference action. Junior forward Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) led the Hawks with a pair of goals—her first two of the young season.

After being outshot, 6-2, in the first stanza, New Paltz came out on fire in the second half. The Hawks put seven shots on goal in the first 12 minutes of the second period before Aragosa opened scoring with a shot that tucked inside the back right post at 50:03.

Following a William Paterson timeout, the Hawks continued to uncork shots, and in the 55th minute, Aragosa scored unassisted once again, this time finishing from the right side after junior midfielder/forward Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) put two consecutive shots on target that were turned aside by Pioneer goalkeeper Kellye Statz.

William Paterson got some momentum back over the course of the next two minutes, taking three shots, two of which were on goal. Junior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) stood tall, though, setting aside both attempts to preserve the shutout bid.

The Hawks then called timeout, which served as a precursor to their final tally. At 59:06, sophomore midfielder Emily Vanacore (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) closed scoring after finishing a through ball from junior midfielder Lauren Link (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West).

New Paltz held the upper hand in shots, 18-12, and took 13 penalty corners to William Paterson's nine. Pjetri moved to 2-0 and earned her second straight shutout, marking the third time in program history that the Hawks have earned shutouts in consecutive games. She made six saves in the winning effort. Her counterpart, Statz, stopped 12 shots in the loss.

The Hawks next square off with No. 8 Skidmore College on Saturday, Sept. 8, in a 1 p.m. non-conference game in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
