ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (2-0) continued its hot start with its second sweep in as many matches, defeating SUNY Cortland (0-1) on Friday, 9-0, in the first day of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division pool play, hosted by SUNY Oneonta.

Seniors Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) defeated Loraine Jelinek and Jean Martinez, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Junior Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) snuck by Shannon Grodotzke and Janette O'Keefe, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, senior Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) won the most decisive double match of the afternoon, 8-1, over Dilara Kumbul and Jaclyn Cartwright.

Each singles match ended in a two-set victory for each of the Hawks. Wilson defeated Jelinek, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, while DiPaulo took down Martinez at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4. Munroe swept her first set with Grodotzke, 6-0, but needed a tiebreaker to win the second set, 7-5, in the No. 3 match. At No. 4, Esposito dropped O'Keefe, 6-0, 6-1. Schmidt won her No. 5 match against Kumbul, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) was able to knock off Cartwright, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 to complete the sweep for New Paltz.

SUNYAC East pool play continues tomorrow with New Paltz taking on the host Red Dragons of Oneonta. Originally scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., the start time for the match has been moved to 9 a.m. due to expected inclement weather.
