BOSTON, Mass. – After losing in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (3-1-0) bounced back with a vengeance, blowing out Simmons College (0-2-0), 6-0, on the first day of the Simmons Tournament on Saturday.
Though she had plenty of help, senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) earned her third win and shutout of the season by stopping a season-high 10 shots on the afternoon.

Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) notched her second goal of the season in the 24th minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Senior forward
Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) assisted Abravanel's goal for her first helper of the year. In the 32nd minute, senior midfielder
Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added a goal of her own to leave New Paltz with a 2-0 lead at the half. Bowling has scored a goal in each game for the Hawks this season.
The onslaught continued as the Hawks posted another four scores in the second half. Senior defenders
Gabby Martino (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and
Emily Rokitowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) each scored their first goals of the season, while sophomore forward
Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and freshman forward
Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each contributed with a goal of their own. Freshman midfielder
Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) picked up her first assist in the blue and orange on Rokitowski's netter.
New Paltz outshot Simmons, 20-17, with a 17-10 advantage in shots on goal. Abravanel led the Hawks with four shots on goal, while six others each fired off two shot on target.
The Simmons Tournament concludes Sunday, Sept. 8. The Hawks take on DeSales University at 12 p.m.
