No. 9 Men’s Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Win over Bard in UVC Opener

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 9 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (6-0, 1-0 UVC) made quick work of Bard College (1-5, 0-1 UVC) in the 2013 United Volleyball Conference (UVC) opener for both teams on Wednesday night at the Hawk Center, as the Hawks hit to the tune of .493 in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-18) victory over the Raptors.

New Paltz recorded six total blocks to Bard's three, and the Hawks served up 12 aces. Furthermore, the home team had a 73 percent success rate of siding out Bard for the match, and the Raptors hit just .069.

Set one featured a prolific attack by New Paltz, as the Hawks posted a .650 hitting percentage. New Paltz also had a perfect sideout percentage, and the Blue and Orange wound up winning, 25-10, in the first stanza.

The second set featured four ties and two lead changes. Three straight Bard points made the score 6-4 in favor of the Raptors, but the Hawks went on a four-point tear, and a service ace by freshman middle blocker Christopher Husmann (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made the tally 8-6 in favor of New Paltz. Kai Bernier-Chen floored a termination for Bard on the ensuing point to draw the Raptors back within one, but another four-point scoring spree by the Hawks put the home team up for good in the frame.

With Bard leading 5-3 in the third set, the Hawks rattled off five straight points, and back-to-back kills by senior outside hitter Bryan Weber (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) gave New Paltz an 8-5 advantage. Neither team was able to score more than two straight points midway through the set, but the Hawks seemingly traded two points for every Bard point. With the tally at 19-15 in favor of New Paltz, three straight Hawk points put the set out of reach for the Raptors.

Freshman outside hitter Tim Ferriter (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit) pounded down 10 kills in 14 total attempts with no errors, fashioning a .714 hitting percentage. He also was stellar on defense, notching one block solo and two block assists. Sophomore setter John Lutjen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and junior setter Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) dished out 13 and 12 assists, respectively, while Ferriter, freshman setter/right side Christian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and freshman libero/setter Kevin Nardone (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) all tied for the match-high in digs with four. Smith had a hot hand off the serve with four service aces.

For Bard, Billy Williams collected six kills, while Henry Kasiske dished out 14 assists. Daniel Gagne and Kasiske tied for the match-high in digs with four.

New Paltz takes a week off from competition before taking on Baruch College on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m.
