Allocco Hits NCAA “B” Cut in Mile; Women’s Swimming Sixth at ECACs

BRONX, N.Y. – Senior Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) blasted the NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 1,650 freestyle on day one of the three-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships on Friday at Lehman College, and the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team finished out the session sixth out of 16 squads with 98 points.

Allocco clocked a 17:17.62 in the 1,650 freestyle, which was good for second place in the event behind New York University's Joanna Kostin, who charted a 17:06.51. Allocco's swim, which is her best-ever non-tapered performance, was slightly off her program record of 17:09.21 that was set at the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships. While her performance from Friday is unlikely to make the selection time for the 2014 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, it serves as a strong benchmark being an untapered swim.

New Paltz continues action at the ECAC Winter Championships tomorrow, as the bulk of the events will be contested. There will be a 10 a.m. session followed by a 6 p.m. session. Both sessions will have different events, as each race is a timed final.

NCAA Division I Fairfield University paces the field with 180 points, while New York University follows closely behind with 171 points. The Stevens Institute of Technology (third, 122), Siena College (fourth, 118) and Columbia University (fifth, 114) also stand in front of the Hawks in the team standings.

New Paltz's meet began with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay, as the foursome of sophomore Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central), junior Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt), sophomore Kim Kallansrude (Muttontown, N.Y./Jericho) and senior Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) clocked a time of 1:51.07. Beyond Allocco in the 1,650 freestyle, freshman Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) was the Hawks' next finisher in 18:50.93. Fici placed 18th overall in the event.
