HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The No. 8 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (10-4) suffered a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams on Saturday at the Juniata Tournament, falling, 3-1, to No. 1 Springfield College before losing a 3-1 decision to No. 6 Juniata College.
Against Springfield, freshman outside hitter
Tim Ferriter (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequiot) floored 18 kills and hit at a .630 clip. Junior outside hitter/setter
Brian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) also contributed to the attack by flooring 10 terminations. Sophomore setter
John Lutjen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and freshman setter/right side
Christian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out 24 and 18 assists, respectively, while C. Smith added eight digs.
For the Pride, Mike Pelletier fashioned a .643 hitting percentage and landed 18 kills. Mike Becker handed out 39 assists, while Greg Falcone had four service aces.
Ferriter once again led the way against Juniata, flooring 19 kills. Lutjen and C. Smith dished out 28 and 19 assists, respectively, while Ferriter and Lutjen each posted eight digs.
For the Eagles, Joe Bortak (13), Ross Madden (12) and Matthew Kinnebrew (10) all reached double figures in kills, while Rob Strauss tallied nine digs. Paul Kuhn blocked well, with seven total blocks to his credit.
New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, as it takes on SUNYIT in a 7 p.m. United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match.
