Women’s Swimming Wins Skidmore Sprint Invitational

Meet Results

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team's depth proved too much to handle for the field at the Skidmore Sprint Invitational, as the Hawks placed first out of seven teams with 578 points on Saturday afternoon. It marked the team's final tune-up before the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships.

Runner-up William Smith College posted 365 points, while Vassar College placed third with 328.5 points. Host Skidmore College (310.5), Sarah Lawrence College (58), Bard College (13) and SUNY Cobleskill (3) rounded out the remainder of the field.

Freshman Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) won two individual events for the Hawks, placing first in the 400 individual medley (4:54.15) and the 100 freestyle (55.99). Griger also swam a leg on New Paltz's first-place 200 freestyle relay team, which clocked a 1:43.01. Senior Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot), freshman Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and junior Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) filled out the rest of the relay.

Graffin had a standout meet, too, taking an individual event title and swimming on two winning relays. She scored first-place points in the 100 butterfly (1:02.94), and she also swam the butterfly leg on New Paltz's first-place 200 medley relay squad that charted a 1:53.73. The Hawks' “A” 200 medley relay contingent consisted of seniors Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), Graffin and Scalise.

Senior Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) was the only other event winner for New Paltz. She touched first in the 50 breaststroke, covering the event in 33.44.

New Paltz went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay, as the Hawks' “B” relay squad of freshman Casey O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), sophomore Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and freshmen Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and Zoe Papetti (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) clocked a second-place time of 1:59.19. Other second-place performances came from sophomore Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) in the 500 freestyle (5:31.34) and the 200 freestyle (2:04.04), Suzuka in the 50 freestyle (25.72) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.25), Jakubek in the 50 breaststroke (33.54), freshman Kim Kallansrude (Muttontown, N.Y./Jericho) in the 400 individual medley (4:59.87), Scalise in the 50 backstroke (29.91) and Marshall in the 100 individual medley (1:04.91).

New Paltz will spend the upcoming weeks training for the 2013 SUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championships, which will occur from Thursday, Feb. 21, through Saturday, Feb. 23, at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center.
