BUFFALO – A number of strong performances from the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team during day two of the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center helped the Hawks move up to third in the team standings. Through two days of competition, New Paltz has racked up 374 points.
The Hawks led off Friday's evening session with a record-breaking performance, as the 200 medley relay team of senior
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), sophomore
Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), senior
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and junior
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) won with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:46.36. That time bettered the former program, conference meet and conference overall record (1:46.44) set by New Paltz's 2011 contingent of Suzuka, Becky Baker, Marshall and
Christine Rieth.
Junior
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) followed suit in the 400 individual medley, shattering the former program, conference meet and conference overall records in the event by clocking an event-winning and NCAA provisional time of 4:30.56. Allocco, who has now won the event for three straight seasons, reset her own program record of 4:33.84, which she set in 2011. She also wiped out the conference meet and overall record of 4:32.90, which was set by Lindsay Dressel of SUNY Geneseo in 2009. Freshman
Kim Kallansrude (Muttontown, N.Y./Jericho) finished eighth in the event with a time of 4:49.25.
Marshall broke the 100 butterfly program record with her first-place performance in the event, as she cruised to a time of 58.20. She bettered her former mark of 58.58, which she set in 2012. Freshman
Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford), Kallansrude and freshman
Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) all finished in sequence in the 100 butterfly's consolation final, taking 11th (1:00.36), 12th (1:00.39) and 13th (1:00.97), respectively.
Scalise registered an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock at 1:53.24 to finish second overall. Freshman
Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) also made the championship final in the 200 freestyle, and she placed fifth (1:55.47). Sophomore
Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) and senior
Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) each swam in the consolation final and placed 12th (1:59.48) and 16th (2:02.81), respectively.
Stewart cruised to a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, checking in with a time of 1:07.27. Senior
Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) represented the Hawks in the event's consolation final, going a 1:10.36 to finish 12th overall.
Suzuka won the 100 backstroke for the fourth year in a row, becoming the first-ever four-time SUNYAC champion in the event in the conference's history. She touched at 56.41, which met NCAA provisional qualification. Freshman
Casey O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) qualified for the consolation final and recorded a time of 1:03.63.
Finally, in the 800 freestyle relay, the quartet of Allocco, Griger, Buyes and Scalise posted a second-place standard of 7:41.70, which cleared the NCAA provisional time. That bettered the former program mark of 7:47.65, which was set by the contingent of Allocco, Marissa Morris, Scalise and Jessica Lester in 2011.
The Hawks wrap up action at the SUNYAC Championships tomorrow, with the preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. and the final heats commencing at 6 p.m.
