SHENANDOAH, Texas – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team's 400 medley relay squad of senior
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), sophomore
Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), senior
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and junior
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) earned Honorable Mention All-America honors on Thursday at the 2013 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) and the City of Shenandoah at the Conroe ISD Natatorium. The Hawks scored four points and now sit in a tie for 34th following the second day of competition.
Suzuka led off with a 56.14 swimming the 100 backstroke, while Stewart clocked a 1:08.15 in the 100 breaststroke. Marshall split a 58.72 in the 100 butterfly before Scalise reeled in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's anchor leg with a time of 50.95 in the 100 freestyle, giving New Paltz a 15th-place finish with a time of 3:53.96. It marks Suzuka's second Honorable Mention All-America distinction and her third overall All-America honor. Stewart, Marshall and Scalise all earned Honorable Mention All-America status for the first time.
All-America honors are accorded to those who finish in the top eight, while Honorable Mention All-America status is bestowed upon those who finish between ninth and 16th.
In the morning heats, senior
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished 21st in the 400 individual medley (4:34.18), while Scalise narrowly missed out on qualifying for the consolation final heat with a 17th-place showing in the 200 freestyle (1:51.84). Her 200 freestyle performance erased the former program record of 1:52.86 set by Michelle Coombs in 2007.
New Paltz continues action at the NCAA Championships from Friday, March 22, through Saturday, March 23. The preliminary heats are slated for 11 a.m. EDT, with the final heats to follow at 7 p.m. EDT.
