SHENANDOAH, Texas – Junior
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 1,650 freestyle by placing 16th with a time of 17:21.54 on Saturday at the 2013 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) and the City of Shenandoah at the Conroe ISD Natatorium. New Paltz concluded the four-day meet with five points, which put the Hawks in a tie for 47th out of 54 teams.
Allocco swam in the first of two afternoon heats of the 1,650—a timed-final event. She placed eighth in her heat and had the ninth-fastest time heading into the evening championship final. Allocco posted a time faster than Amherst College's Charlotte Chudy—the eighth-place finisher in the championship final—to finish 16th overall. Allocco's standard was just .04 seconds faster than the 17th-place competitor, a razor-thin margin in the 1,650 freestyle. This marks Allocco's first-ever Honorable Mention All-America recognition.
All-America honors are accorded to those who finish in the top eight, while Honorable Mention All-America status is bestowed upon those who finish between ninth and 16th.
In the preliminary heats of the 100 freestyle, junior
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) charted yet another solid time, as she clocked a 51.77 to place 20th overall. Senior
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) wound up placing 21st in the 200 backstroke, as she posted a time of 2:03.51.
New Paltz finished the 2012-13 campaign by sending its largest-ever contingent to the national championship meet.
