ITHACA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (13-3) defeated the 16th ranked team in the Northeast region in Ithaca College (15-3), 6-3, on Friday at the Wheeler Tennis Courts.
In what was expected to be one of their toughest matches of the year, the Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead after doubles play. New Paltz wrapped up the match by winning four of the six singles matches to take down the Bombers.
Seniors Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) won an exciting No. 1 doubles match over Ithaca's Cristina Nunez and Carly Siegel with a 9-8 decision after winning the tiebreaker, 7-2. Junior Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) took down Laurel Salladay and Marni Blumenthal at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, but sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Allison Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) fell at third doubles, 8-5, to Allison Vizgaitis and Alyssa Steinweis.
Wilson fell to Nunez, who is ranked 17th in the region, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, for just her second dual match loss of the year. DiPaulo won her No. 2 singles match over Siegel, 6-3, 6-1, while Munroe took down Salladay at third singles, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) lost the first set of her No. 4 match to Vizgaitis in a tiebreaker, but went on to win the match 6-7 (9-11), 6-2, 6-0. Schmidt was unable to defeat Blumenthal at No. 5, falling 6-1, 6-2, but freshman Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) picked her up with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at sixth singles.
New Paltz is scheduled to play its next match on Wednesday, April 14, at The College of New Jersey, which is currently ranked No. 14 in the region. The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m. in Ewing, N.J.
