MAHWAH, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (3-2) responded from back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked teams with a record-breaking victory on Friday afternoon over non-conference Ramapo College (0-4), as the Hawks prevailed, 11-1, at Ramapo's Athletic Center in Mahwah, N.J.
New Paltz as a team set two program marks in the victory: most goals in a game (11) and largest margin of victory (10). The previous standard in both categories came on Oct. 20, 2012, when the Hawks topped Morrisville State College, 8-1. Individually, senior forward
Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) set a pair of single-game marks: most goals in a game (5) and most points in a game (10). Eight student-athletes owned the previous single-game goal mark with three, and
Morgan Lizotte was the most recent Hawk to achieve a hat trick, as she netted three markers against Morrisville State on Oct. 20, 2012. Sarah Schloss possessed the previous single-game point record with seven, as she registered three goals and one assist against The College at Brockport on Sept. 18, 2009.
Beyond Conklin's five-goal performance, sophomore forward
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) tallied two goals and two assists. Junior forward
Alex Gallo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), senior midfielder
Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park), freshman forward/midfielder
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and freshman forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added one score each, while senior midfielder
Lauren Link (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Stock each boasted an assist.
New Paltz set the tone early on, as McKeveny scored unassisted 1:16 into the contest. Ackerman scored two straight goals before Conklin netted a pair of unanswered markers. Gallo and Stock each rattled the back of the cage with less than 10 minutes left in the first half, while Ramapo's Kelsey Lawrence broke up the Hawks' shutout bid with a goal at 33:39. New Paltz entered the intermission with a 7-1 lead.
Despite already having two goals to her credit, Conklin corralled a natural hat trick in a 10-minute span midway through the second stanza. Landy buried the Hawks' final score of the game at 65:25.
New Paltz cashed in on 50 percent of the shots it took, as the Hawks owned a 22-6 advantage in shots. New Paltz also outgained the Roadrunners in penalty corners (13-5).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) drew her first career start and notched her first career victory, going the distance in a three-save effort. Ramapo used two goalkeepers, each of whom played for 35 minutes. Alicia Lyons finished with six stops, while Emily Kramer made three saves.
New Paltz opens up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Wednesday, Sept. 18, as it visits Morrisville State College for a 4 p.m. contest.
