Late Goal Hurts Field Hockey in 5-4 Loss to No. 16 Rochester

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A goal by the University of Rochester's Michelle Relin with 1.3 seconds to go in regulation broke a 4-all tie, as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (4-3) fell by a 5-4 final to the 16th-ranked Yellowjackets (7-1) on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.

Relin beat the buzzer twice, as she scored as time expired in the first half as well. Relin's final marker capped off a three-goal afternoon, as she led all players in scoring. Senior forward Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and sophomore defender Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) paced the Hawks with one goal and one assist each, while junior forward Alex Gallo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and freshman forward/midfielder Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) also scored for New Paltz. Senior midfielder Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park) and sophomore forward Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) added one assist each for the Hawks. For Rochester, Katie Flaschner and Callie Fisher both notched a goal and an assist, while Lindsey Randall and Megan Keil each tallied one assist.

Rochester opened scoring in the 12th minute, as Relin cashed in on a Keil feed that came off a penalty corner. Conklin leveled the tally at 27:49, as she tipped in a Caruana pass. Relin rattled the back of the cage off a Fisher feed as time expired in the first half, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.

New Paltz bounced back with back-to-back goals in the second half. Ackerman earned the assist on a Gallo marker at 45:59, while Caruana scored off a penalty-corner chance set up by Conklin at 52:10. That set the stage for a wild final eight minutes of play, as four goals were registered before the final buzzer.

Flaschner scored unassisted to even the score at 62:00, while McKeveny responded 2:36 later to give the Hawks a one-goal advantage. Fisher tied the game at 4-all two minutes after that, using a Randall pass, and Flaschner set up Relin's game-winner in the final moments of the contest.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) sustained the loss, making 13 saves, while Madison Wagner notched the win for the Yellowjackets with two stops.

Rochester took 23 shots to New Paltz's 11, and the Yellowjackets owned a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners.

New Paltz continues State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, Sept. 27, as it hosts SUNY Geneseo at 4 p.m. at the Turf Field.
