Box Score
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (4-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) was unable to overcome a one-goal deficit that came about early in the second half against SUNY Geneseo (4-3, 1-0 SUNYAC), losing by a 2-1 final Friday at the Turf Field in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest. It marked the Knights' 2013 SUNYAC opener.
Sophomore forward
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) opened scoring at 24:30, netting an unassisted goal off a scramble that resulted from a blocked shot. Just 2:31before halftime, Geneseo's Kayla DeAngelis fed Sarah Malinak with a pass from the right wing, and Malinak poked the ball in to knot the tally at 1-all.
DeAngelis, whose seven shots were all on goal, cashed in at short range in the 41st minute, and that proved to be all the offense Geneseo needed to pull out the road win.
The Knights held a 19-14 edge in shots and won the penalty corner battle, 10-9.
Senior goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) helped pace the Hawks on defense with 11 stops, while senior defender
Madeliene Forrester (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and senior midfielder
Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park) each had a defensive save. Dayna Mercer turned aside six shots in the win.
New Paltz will look to get back in the win column tomorrow, as it squares off with The College at Brockport at 1 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest.
