Men's Volleyball Begins Season This Weekend at Roadrunner Invitational

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 4 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team kicks off its 2014 season this weekend, competing at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Ramapo College from Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 25-26. While there, the Hawks meet up with Brooklyn College (4 p.m.) and The City College of New York (6 p.m.) on Saturday before facing off with No. 11 Stevenson University (12 p.m.) and host Ramapo (2 p.m.) on Sunday.

RECORDS: New Paltz, Brooklyn, CCNY and Ramapo all are 0-0, while Stevenson is 1-0.
 
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (0-0): New Paltz returns all six of its starters from last year's 27-6 (8-3 UVC) team in addition to its libero… Sophomore outside hitter Tim Ferriter has been chosen as a 2014 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. NCAA Division III Preseason All-American after a freshman season in which he was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III Men's Newcomer of the Year, the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Rookie of the Year, a First-Team All-American and a First-Team All-UVC choice… The Hawks earned a No. 4 ranking in the AVCA's national preseason poll for NCAA Division III… Last season, New Paltz advanced to the semifinal round of the UVC Tournament, and before its semifinal-round loss to the Stevens Institute of Technology, the Hawks rattled off a 12-match win streak.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS (0-0): Brooklyn went 13-12 overall and 8-6 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) in 2013… The Bulldogs fell to top-seeded Baruch College in the semifinal round of the CUNYAC Tournament last year… Brooklyn's sophomore outside hitter David Dimitruk returns after a season in which he posted solid all-around numbers… He averaged 3.25 kills per set, 2.31 digs per set and 0.31 service aces per set in 2013.
  
LAST MEETING: New Paltz last beat Brooklyn College, 3-0 (30-15, 30-18, 30-16), on April 8, 2005, at a tournament hosted by Ramapo. No match recap is available from that contest.
 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS (0-0): CCNY went 13-15 overall (6-8 CUNYAC) in 2013… The Beavers lost to Brooklyn, 3-1 (26-24, 27-25, 36-38, 25-22), in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Tournament last season… Senior outside hitter/setter Brian Yik Lim led the team in kills per set (3.14) and digs per set (2.51) last season, while then-senior Rubin Taipi floored 0.69 service aces per set.
 
LAST MEETING: CCNY lost, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18), when the Beavers last faced New Paltz on Jan. 22, 2012… See below for that match recap.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS (1-0): Stevenson kicked off its season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-19) win over Lancaster Bible College on Thursday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium… In that match, senior outside hitter Austin Jacoby landed his 1,000th career kill… Jacoby is now the second player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau, with program record holder J.R. Jackson '09 being the only other member of the club (1,511)… Stevenson is now 5-2 in season openers since 2008… The Mustangs fielded a balanced attack, with 11 players notching at least one kill, including four each from senior right side Jon Martin and sophomore outside hitter Patrick Schuyler.
 
LAST MEETING: New Paltz prevailed in a thrilling five-set fashion when the two teams last met on March 23, 2013… Stevenson took sets one (28-26) and four (25-23), while New Paltz won sets two (25-16), three (25-16) and five (15-12)… Then-sophomore outside hitter John Lutjen achieved a triple-double with 14 kills, 25 assists and 12 digs.

SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS (0-0): Ramapo will look to improve upon a 20-12 (11-3 Skyline) season that saw the Roadrunners fall in the final round of the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Volleyball Tournament… The Roadrunners' season ended with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) loss to Stevenson… Ramapo's signature win last season came on Feb. 3 when it beat then-No. 14 Kean University, 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 25-19, 25-17)… The Roadrunners expect to contend for a Skyline Conference championship this year, as they return their entire starting lineup from 2013.
 
LAST MEETING: New Paltz topped Ramapo, 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-18), at the Hawk Center on April 10, 2013.

WHAT'S NEXT: New Paltz opens up UVC play on Wednesday, Jan. 29, against Vassar College at 7 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y… Brooklyn meets up with Purchase College next on Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Purchase, N.Y… CCNY returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 30, against NYU-Polytechnic at 7 p.m. at home… Stevenson next faces Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. in Owings Mills, Md… Ramapo meets up with Elms College and Vassar in a tri-match on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Vassar's Kenyon Hall… The Roadrunners face Elms at 3 p.m. and Vassar at 5 p.m.
